What colours go with Woodland Grey® by COLORBOND® steel?

29 August 2023

Grey is having a big moment in design and décor lately.

In fact, the trend among younger homeowners to use it in their decorating has been dubbed “millennial grey”, with some exploring how to “escape” from this overused colour scheme. An upwards angled shot of a grey gable shed wall against a blue sky

But with sheds, the greys just make sense. COLORBOND® steel’s Sheds range includes 9 different greys, from the cool and pale Southerly® to the darker and imposing shades. (Fun fact – it may not be quite 50 shades of grey, but in the extended COLORBOND® range there are over 30 greys and silvers.)

But we're focusing on one – Woodland Grey®. Most importantly, which colours go best with it?

What COLORBOND® steel colours go with Woodland Grey®?

Choosing the best colour combination depends on personal preferences and overall design vision. However, some COLORBOND® steel colours that tend to suit are:
  1. Surfmist®: A soft and warm white colour that provides a beautiful contrast.

  2. Shale Grey™: A light and delicate grey that harmonises well, Shale Grey™ can create a calming, balanced colour scheme.

  3. Dune®: A warm colour that creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

  4. Evening Haze®: Another complementary, warm muted colour that creates a harmonious blend.

  5. Wallaby®: A medium-toned brown grey that can add warmth and richness.A front view of the lean to and open carport area to the left side of a larger grey shed which is just visible to the right

Which general colour palettes work with Woodland Grey® tones?

For complementary colours in other building materials, or inspiration for garden accessories or decorative items, here are some more colours that pair perfectly:
  1. Crisp White: The contrast with bright, crisp white creates a clean, contemporary look. White trim or accents can make the deeper shade stand out providing a fresh modern appearance.

  2. Soft Neutrals: Soft neutral colours like beige, taupe, or light grey complement this shade without overpowering it.

  3. Charcoal or Dark Grey: Using different shades of grey can be an elegant choice for a sophisticated and cohesive monochromatic look.

  4. Deep Blue: Navy or deep blue adds a touch of richness and depth to the colour palette, particularly striking for a coastal or nautical-themed design.

  5. Sage Green: A soft sage harmonises with green undertones. This combination creates a natural, serene ambiance.A smaller shed with a red skillion roof and grey walls, with a roller door and personal access door both in blue.

Which colours clash with Woodland Grey®?

COLORBOND® steel colours are designed to complement one another, so if you choose from their 22-strong standard colour range, you're pretty safe.A grey shed with a large single roller door with the industrial equipment inside just visible through the half open door.
However, there are a few colour palettes you might want to reconsider. These tend to have conflicting undertones, or might not give good contrast.
  1. Cool Blues: Bright and cool blues can clash with the greens of Woodland Grey®, creating a discordant combination.

  2. Bright Yellows: Intense yellows can clash with muted and earthy tones, causing visual discomfort.

  3. Vibrant Reds: Vibrant and bold reds might clash with its subdued nature, creating a jarring effect.

  4. Neon or Electric Colors: Extremely bright or neon-like colours can clash with its subtlety creating an overwhelming contrast.

  5. Bright Pinks: Vibrant and intense pinks might clash with its natural and understated appeal.

Of course, it's all up to personal style, and an unusual colour scheme could be your perfect artistic statement.A white shed roof with a bold pink trim and colourful bunting

Should I match my shed colour scheme to my house exterior or fence?

It depends on your goals for the colour scheme. Matching with the house creates coherence and aesthetic harmony, while a match with the fence colour provides separation and can highlight the fence as a focal point.

You may also want to consider the layout of your property, and how close the shed will sit to the house. An Australian Barn style Colorbond shed with Manor Red walls and Woodland Grey doors and trim

Is Woodland Grey® the same as Monument®?

While both are popular shades, they are distinct.

The lighter Woodland Grey® is a greenish-grey colour, inspired by coastal scrub and inland bush and perfect for country style homes.

The dark and imposing Monument is a deep charcoal grey, reminiscent of volcanic formations on the southern coastline, and makes a bold exterior statement.Black volcanic rock formations surrounded by coastal waves
